Before You Begin
When Solomon was chosen as king, he was placed on King David’s mule and paraded through Jerusalem to the place where he was anointed with oil. Jehu was anointed as king of Israel several generations later, and his followers honored him by quickly taking off their garments and laying them down for their new king to walk on.
When Jesus entered Jerusalem on the colt, the people placed their cloaks on the ground and waved branches, welcoming Him like they would a king. Can you see the significance? God’s people were desperate for a king to save them from Rome’s oppression. They called out to Jesus; God’s anointed one, asking Him to save them. Jesus would offer His people salvation, but it wasn’t the way they thought He would.
As we, too, wait for Jesus to return and rule as King, we can encourage our children that God’s kingdom is eternal and His salvation is for all who trust in Jesus. We look forward to the day when together we see Him and joyfully proclaim, … Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord. (Matthew 23:39)
