Talk Together

Family conversations with God’s Word.

What do you want to be? What could you do each day?

In the Old Testament, the Bible introduces us to a young man who was a shepherd. When he grew up he became a king! God picked this man from His chosen family, the Israelites.

Years after Abraham’s passing, God guided the Israelites to the long-awaited Promised Land. God was the leader of the Israelites, but they wanted a human king. God chose Saul to be the first king of Israel. Saul looked like a king, but he disobeyed God’s commandments.

Because of this, God sent his prophet Samuel to Bethlehem (the future home of Jesus!) to find the next king. God’s choice surprised Samuel. God picked a young shepherd named David to be the next leader of His people. David did not win the job based on his looks and job title. God chose David because of his heart.

God not only selected David to be a king, but He also chose David to be part of his plan to save the world. Let’s read about it in 2 Samuel chapter 7, verses 8-13.

ESV

“Now, therefore, thus you shall say to my servant David, ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts, I took you from the pasture, from following the sheep, that you should be prince over my people Israel. And I have been with you wherever you went and have cut off all your enemies from before you. And I will make for you a great name, like the name of the great ones of the earth. And I will appoint a place for my people Israel and will plant them, so that they may dwell in their own place and be disturbed no more. And violent men shall afflict them no more, as formerly, from the time that I appointed judges over my people Israel. And I will give you rest from all your enemies. Moreover, the Lord declares to you that the Lord will make you a house. When your days are fulfilled and you lie down with your fathers, I will raise up your offspring after you, who shall come from your body, and I will establish His kingdom. He shall build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of His kingdom forever.’”

Even though David was a king, he was still a human. When David was old, he died and was buried, just like his family members were before him. But God told David that a King from David’s family was coming who would rule God’s people forever! David loved God and trusted in God’s plan for the future of His chosen people.

This King would be a descendent of Abraham and David, the Messiah promised from ancient times, the perfect sacrifice to save us from our sins, the chosen Savior — Jesus Christ.
