What Should I Do When I'm Afraid?

Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego were teenagers when the Babylonians took God’s people into captivity. Even though these teens faced a radically different culture than their own, their commitment and faith in God never changed.

The Bible doesn’t tell us about Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego’s childhood, but more than likely their deep faith started with parents like you – parents dedicated to teaching their children God’s truth. They would have memorized God’s commandments and learned about His power and protection. And then, when scary situations came their way, they could hold fast to the truth they were taught.

We read about one of those scary situations in Daniel chapter 3. Given the choice of being thrown in the fiery furnace or worshiping someone other than the one true God, they chose to courageously believe God’s purpose and obey him – even in the face of death. Let’s pray our children have the same dedication Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego did, and help build a foundation of faith in their lives. As you Talk About fear this week, encourage your children that even in life’s scariest situations, we can trust God is in control. As the psalmist says: When I am afraid, I put my trust in you … in God I trust; I shall not be afraid. What can flesh do to me? (Psalm 56:3-4)
