Our kids are older now; but when they were newborns, before they were placed in our arms, my husband and I thought about ways to protect them. We put up baby gates, covered all the outlets and purged dangerous items from our home. Then, we turned on nightlights and tightened bike helmets. Soon, we’ll be praying to see their cars in the driveway before dark.
We want to protect our children! But how do we protect them from fear and the Scary Situations we know they will face? If we want our children to trust God, even when they’re scared, they need to know who He is and what He’s done. We can’t ask our kids to trust someone they don’t know. When we open the Bible and read how God works in the lives of His people and how He takes care of us, it gives us confidence that His ways are always best.
The fear of being left out or made fun of, worrying about missed assignments or bad grades, and even uncertainty of what comes next, can be crippling for our children. It’s hard to understand how to help them fight battles we can’t see. Thankfully we can rest assured that the God who created them, and knows every hair on their head and thought in their mind and will hold them in His righteous right hand. As good as our plans are for our children, we can trust God’s are better.
