Talk Together

Family conversations with God’s Word.

Do you know who the leader of your country is? How about the principal of your school? A lot of leaders exist in this world. Earth has seen many powerful kings, queens and presidents. However nothing in the universe compares to Jesus Christ. No one and nothing is more powerful, glorious or good than He is. Jesus is above all things.

Many years ago, the missionary Paul sat in prison. While he was there, he heard that a church in a city called Colossae was in trouble. People were trying to lead the Colossians away from Jesus!

Because he was in prison, Paul couldn’t go to Colossae in person. But that didn’t stop him from writing them a letter. The letter he wrote became the book of Colossians. It’s the same Colossians we find in our Bible today!

In chapter 1, Paul talks to the Colossians about how nothing compares to Jesus. He is the Lord of everything. Let’s take a look and read Colossians 1:15-23.

ESV

"He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by Him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through Him and for Him. And He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together. And He is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything He might be preeminent. For in Him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, and through Him to reconcile to Himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of His cross. And you, who once were alienated and hostile in mind, doing evil deeds, He has now reconciled in His body of flesh by His death, in order to present you holy and blameless and above reproach before Him, if indeed you continue in the faith, stable and steadfast, not shifting from the hope of the gospel that you heard, which has been proclaimed in all creation under heaven, and of which I, Paul, became a minister."

What does verse 17 say about Jesus? It says He is before all things. But what does that mean? It means Jesus isn’t a creation of this world. Jesus is God, the Creator of this world!

Jesus is the image of our invisible God. He came to Earth in human form as a baby!
Jesus is the head of God’s church. He leads Christians through life!
Jesus is the Savior of the world. Anyone who trusts Him as their Savior will be saved!
Jesus is superior to all, and He loves you.

Paul needed the Colossians (and us!) to understand just how glorious Jesus is. No one and nothing is greater than King Jesus! Other kings, queens or presidents are temporary creations. They can’t compare with their Creator. Jesus is above all things.
