One of my favorite childhood memories is watching Miss Jean walk to the front of our small church and sing the words to the Gaither song, “I’m so glad I’m a part of the family of God.” You could tell by the emotion in her voice and the tears in her eyes that she meant every word. The family she was singing about wasn’t related by the blood in their veins, but instead by the precious blood of Jesus Christ.
When we read the story of Abraham, we marvel at how God promised Abraham and Sarah a child, baby Isaac, even in their old age. We’re blown away by the size of the Jewish nation, God’s chosen people, just a few generations later. But God’s promise also included another child — a descendant who would be a blessing to all people, for all time.
Jesus is the fulfillment of God’s promise to Abraham and the blessing that extends to every earthly family. God’s family now includes not only Abraham’s descendants, but everyone who receives Him and believes in His name. Because of Jesus, we can be called sons and daughters of God.
This week, let’s introduce our children to their extended family. Let’s show them a body of believers united by the love of Jesus and working together for His glory. And let’s pray that one day they too can sing, “I’m so glad I’m a part of the family of God.”
